Émilie Mondor

Émilie Mondor (born April 29, 1981 in Montreal , Canada , † September 9, 2006 in Hawkesbury , Ontario ) was a Canadian long-distance runner.

Mondor started running at the age of 14. Her career began in 1997 when she won her first Canadian title. With this placement, she qualified automatically for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in 1998 , where she reached tenth place. In 2001 she began studying at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby and was trained by Mike Lonergan . In the same year she finished second in the Canadian Cross Country Championships and in 2002 she won the Canadian 1500 meter title. She also took part in the NAIA and was able to set the course records here.

In 2003 she reached thirteenth place at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships and was able to set a record over five kilometers in Canada. During the summer she became the first Canadian ever to run 5000 meters under fifteen minutes and finished twelfth at the World Athletics Championships. She won her first medal with the Canadian team in 2004 at the World Cross Country Championships. This medal was the first for Canada since 1983. Already in 2004 she qualified for the Olympic Games in Athens and was able to reach 17th place there. In 2005 she moved from Burnaby to Mammoth Lakes , California, where she trained with Terrence Mahon .

Mondor died in a traffic accident on Highway 417 .
