Civilization is a series of Global Strategy - computer games of developer Sid Meier and his company MicroProse and Firaxis Games . The individual versions of the game combined sold over 33 million copies worldwide. Civilization is thus one of the most successful game series ever.
The first part appeared in 1991. In 1996 MicroProse published the successor Civilization II , another part was created in 2001 with Civilization III at Sid Meier's new company Firaxis Games . Infogrames was the publisher until its dissolution in 2003. From 2003 to 2005 the rights to the series were with Atari SA , since then with 2K Games . Civilization IV appeared in 2005, and in 2010 Civilization V was introduced. Civilization Beyond Earth was released in October 2014 and Civilization VI on October 21, 2016 as the last offshoot of the series to date.
In addition to its direct successors, Civilization has strongly influenced many other games, such as the science fiction offshoot Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri , also developed by Sid Meier , the Civ2 variant Civilization - Test of Time published by MicroProse, and the offshoot Colonization about the colonization of America. Civilization
Civilization is a global strategy game developed in 1991 by MicroProse under the direction of the legendary Sid Meier in the industry and is one of the most famous and successful games of all time. Civilization is considered the most important game in the global strategy genre.
The player controls his people from a world map main screen, from which he has access to various menus. The aim is to make your own empire bigger, more powerful, more progressive and richer than the competition.
Many game mechanisms, such as the display of the map serving as the playing field and the movement system of the units, were taken over by Civilization in almost identical form from the older game Empire , which is therefore to be regarded as a direct model. There was a legal dispute with the manufacturers about the identity of the names, which however remained without consequences, since MicroProse simply bought the name rights in the end.

In 1996 the successor to the first part, Sid Meier's Civilization II, appeared . Civilization III was released by Firaxis Games in 2001 . As with its predecessor, Sid Meier only acted as namesake and influential advisor. "Civ 3" was a great success with critics and buyers, but part of the classic fan base resented the developers for some concessions to casual gamers, inconsistencies in the gameplay (including the unpredictable computer gamers) and, above all, the failure to adopt many innovations from the innovative Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri (real terraforming, more flexible political system, ecology, etc.).

The units correspond to game pieces . With the exception of a limited number of starting units, all players create their units in their cities during the game. There are some civilian units (including construction crew) and many military units (warriors with wooden clubs to battle tanks, depending on the age). The efficient organization of unit production is an essential aspect of the game.
Move
The players move their units on the map, which is divided into squares (hexagons from Civilization V ). In the classic turn-based game, only one player moves his units at a time. Each unit has a certain number of movement points - infantry is usually only allowed to move one space per round, while mounted and motorized units are usually allowed to move two or three spaces. Terrain improvements such as roads and railroads allow additional movement points, and there are types of terrain (for example hills) which cost more than one movement point or which cannot be accessed at all or can only be accessed by certain units. The round is over for a player when none of his units have any more movement points or he ends the round manually - then control is passed on to the next player.
struggle
If a unit is allowed to attack (attack strength> 0), it can fight by entering a space occupied by units belonging to another player (if not already at war , this will start a war after confirmation). During this process, for example, based on the attack strength of the attacker, the defense strength of the attacked unit, various terrain defense bonuses by calculating random numbers, a fight will take place, which reduces the life points of at least one, and from Civilization II also often both participants. A battle ends either with the destruction of the defeated unit or with the withdrawal of the weakened attacker (from Civilization III ). Starting with Civilization V , ranged units can attack without moving to the field occupied by the enemy; they cannot be harmed here. Wounded or damaged units can regenerate by missing one or more turns .
Cities
The special settler unit is the only one allowed to found new cities. Citizens live in cities and can use the surrounding land to obtain basic resources. Depending on the type of terrain, different types of resources are generated (food, production, trade, research, culture and belief). Food is necessary to feed a city and when there is excess food it increases the rate of population growth. Production affects the speed at which new units or buildings are completed. Trade brings in money, increases wealth, and up to Civilization IV also increased research. Research is necessary to explore new technologies. With culture you expand your boundaries (since Civilization VI, you can also use culture to research orientations). With belief that has only appeared since Civilization V, z. B. religious units such as missionaries (to convert other cities) are bought, but this is only possible after the establishment or accession of a religion. Buildings and wonders of the world
Cities can improve themselves by building buildings. With increasing progress, a great many buildings and structures become possible. As of Civilization III , however, some of them are no longer available as technology advances, including city walls. Special structures are the wonders of the world (Great Wonders in Civilization III ). They can only be completed by one player at a time (if several people are currently building the miracle, the building order will be canceled or must be changed upon completion). They have a special effect on the game, for example they can dramatically increase production in the city or produce special, very powerful units at certain intervals. Since world wonders are strategically very valuable, it is important to take good care of them, as conquering the city in question appears particularly tempting for the other players in these cases. With the third part (and continued in the fourth part) a system of culture points was introduced, which is used to calculate which player dominates a certain field on the map. Like other buildings, wonders of the world in particular generate cultural points. The logic behind this is that buildings and specialists “pay” culture points onto the fields surrounding a city. It is therefore possible to lose land and cities through strong cultural pressure from the opponent.
Citizen
The citizens of every city in Civilization not only have the state of mind of contentment , but depending on various factors (for example overpopulation or state of war) can become dissatisfied and stop their work or become happy and celebrate. If they are dissatisfied, they are then no longer available to generate the basic resources of a city. The construction of entertaining buildings or the conversion of ordinary citizens into entertainers can help here. Dissatisfaction during a war has special consequences that should not be underestimated. In addition to entertainers, citizens can also be used in other special functions, for example as scientists, in order to increase the production of corresponding goods. The “Great Personalities” were introduced as a new game concept in the fourth part. They emerge as units that are no longer stationary in a city after citizens have worked as specialists for a while. For example, the use of the specialist “dealer” can lead to the creation of a “great dealer” after a while, which is then given the name of a historical personality such as James Cook . Including the expansions of Civilization IV and V, eight different types of Great People are possible (admiral, general, merchant, engineer, artist, prophet, spy, scientist).
research
The research system in Civilization is kept quite simple. Progress is “produced” like units and buildings. The player's cities generate science. Depending on the level of science, it takes a certain number of rounds until the next progress is unlocked. Progress enables new units, buildings, wonders, etc. In Civilization, only one progress can be researched at a time. The progress is arranged in a tree, for example, knowledge of the stone processing progress may be a prerequisite for unlocking the engineering progress . It is certainly crucial to know how this tree is structured. For example, early research into the technologies of “railroad”, “gravity theory” or “steel” can decisively promote economic, scientific or military development. To research orientations (since Civilization VI), culture is needed instead of science.
Interaction with other civilizations
Diplomatic conditions
There can be several diplomatic states between two civilizations - the most common are the state of war and the state of peace. Any form of hostility is permitted during a state of war; during a period of peace, attacking other units and even moving units into the other territory must be avoided, provided that no right of transit has been agreed. Intermediate stages are the “armistice” and the “open borders” agreement. In the second, third and fourth parts of the series, defense alliances and alliances are now also possible.
Diplomatic contract negotiation and trade
A civilization can contact another if they have already met on the world map . In this case, a diplomatic negotiation takes place. This can result in peace agreements or declarations of war , an exchange of progress, trade in resources or demands for tribute . In Civilization II , III and IV , among other things, the formation of military alliances against a third party or a defensive alliance (automatic alliance formation in the event of attacks by third parties) is possible.
Diplomacy and espionage
Using the special units of the diplomat and the spy or in Civilization III through a menu it is possible to spy on or sabotage opposing civilizations. In this way the player can keep an eye on the progress of a wonder of the world or instigate revolts. The disadvantage of physical actions, however, when exposed, is that they damage the reputation of civilization, making all other civilizations more cautious in making concessions.

There are many different ways to win in Civilization. The game can take special turns and a seemingly inferior player can end up as the winner.
Conquering the world
The winner is the player who has captured or destroyed all other cities, i.e. the last player remaining in the game. To achieve this victory it is also possible to make all states into vassals ( Civilization IV ) or to occupy the capitals of all other nations ( Civilization V and VI ).
Conquering space
The winner is the player who first brings a functioning spaceship to Alpha Centauri (in Civilization III and V the start is enough). In addition to a very well-functioning industry for the construction of the individual spaceship parts, a technological lead is crucial in order to be the first to build them.
Victory through dominance
( Civilization III and IV ) For this victory a player needs 2 ⁄ 3 of all land squares within his borders and 2 ⁄ 3 of the world population in his cities. It is similar to the world conquest victory, but can hardly be achieved without cultural achievements.
Cultural victory
(From Civilization III ) It is possible to win if the entire civilization has been able to collect a certain number of culture points (through religious and scientific buildings as well as wonders of the world) and when it reaches the victory marker (100,000 on the standard map) can show at least twice as many culture points as that second strongest cultural nation. Victory can also come from a single city ( Civilization III ) or three particularly beautiful cities ( Civilization IV ). This requires a high number of culture points in these cities, which give them the city status “legendary”. In Civilization V , 'social policies' are unlocked through culture. If enough social policies have been activated, the 'Utopia Project' can be set up, which will bring victory when completed. Winning this way is a special trump card for technologically inferior and peace-loving players. With the Brave New World expansion pack , the cultural victory has been changed so that tourism is generated through large works (for example well-known documents or pieces of music, but also paintings) and special buildings (for example the Eiffel Tower ). This must be greater than the cultural “production” of all other civilizations.
Diplomatic victory
(From Civilization III ) With the construction of the United Nations Wonder of the World , elections can take place in which all civilizations can elect a UN Secretary General . Candidates are two or three players who are proposed according to certain criteria - the chosen player wins. A good diplomatic reputation and intact contacts with others are essential for this victory. This type of game decision can also occur very suddenly and lead ruthless conquerors to defeat. In Civilization IV - Beyond The Sword , the elections and thus the diplomatic victory can also be brought about by the construction of the world wonder "Apostolic Palace".
Decision when the time is up
If the set number of rounds is over, the player with the highest number of points wins. Points accumulate over time, so they are an expression of average performance. In Civilization III with Play the World and / or Conquests , victory points can be switched on, then the victory points and not the normal points decide. Victory points are special points that can be collected by completing certain tasks - these are specific to each card. This principle can be found in many scenarios from Conquests .
World wonder victory

Flexibility in the rules of the game
Over time it has become possible to tailor the game to the interests of the players. Options include double production and turning off certain victory opportunities. Since rule changes inevitably have consequences for the strategies, this increases the replay value . It has also become common to give the player the opportunity to switch off individual (new) game elements. However, some options are no longer available in the newer Civilizations games that were still available to the players in earlier versions (e.g. "angry barbarians" or "always at war"). The advantage of more options is the high degree of adaptability of the game to the needs of the player. The disadvantage is that the comparability of games suffers and discussions about strategy and tactics are made more difficult.
Modifications of the game
Civilization offers the possibility of so-called mods . The spectrum ranges from graphic modifications that only change the appearance of the game, to scenarios that take on a special era, for example, to total conversions that more or less make Civilization a completely new game. From the second part onwards, minor modifications such as changing the attributes of units, buildings and civilizations can be made with a simple text editor . For the fourth and fifth parts, Firaxis also released an SDK that grants deep intervention into artificial intelligence and game mechanics.
