Freeciv is a free turn-based strategy game based on the classic game Civilization (1991) , which is distributed under the GNU General Public License .
As in the example of Civilization , the player as the leader of a nation has to enlarge it and bring it to prosperity. The long-term goal is to conquer the world, the first expedition to the Alpha Centauri or a victory on points after the end of the regular playing time. The programmers aim for the most complete rule compatibility with Civilization II (1996). Eric S. Raymond described Freeciv in a case study for The Art of UNIX Programming .
Originally the game only had a multiplayer mode, with which the player could compete with other players in the LAN or the Internet ( port 5556 ). Only with later versions (rudimentary from 1.4, playable from 1.6.4) were computer opponents added so that a single player mode is possible.
Freeciv is available for the Solaris , Linux , BSD , Unix , AmigaOS , macOS and Windows operating systems , among others .
There is also a version that can be played as a browser game in the web browser without prior installation . PortableApps versions for Windows XP and the following have been around since 2011.
