FreeCol is a free turn-based strategy game based on the classic game Colonization and distributed under the GNU General Public License . Since it is programmed entirely in Java , FreeCol runs on all systems on which the Java Runtime Environment runs.

Structure of the game

As the proxy of his king, the player is supposed to build a flourishing colony from several settlements in the new world - in America or in a randomly generated country. To meet the victory criterion, the player must either achieve independence from the European homeland or destroy the colonies of the three other settling nations. Both criteria can only be achieved by military means.

FreeCol begins in 1492 with two units on a ship on the ocean near the New World coast.

With these two units, the player founds a first settlement. In the further course he tries to expand his sphere of influence against the indigenous peoples as well as against his European competitors. The player builds his colony step by step, whereby he can rely on the support of the home nation in Europe.

In addition to the military aspect, the mining and refining of raw materials as well as trading play a major role in the game, with warfare clearly in the foreground. In addition to the ships, wagon trains are available to transport the goods , the latter only for overland trade.

Trivia

In February 2007, FreeCol was Project of the Month on SourceForge.net.
