Silent Service (computer game)

In the computer game Silent Service ( German  literally means "silent service" ) is, to a submarine - Simulation of game designer Sid Meier , the 1985 by the company MicroProse to all then current home computer systems has been released. The full name of the game is Silent Service - The Submarine Simulation , whereby Silent Service is also a common name for the Royal Navy Submarine Service , the submarine fleet of the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom . In Germany, the game was also on the market under the title Das U-Boot .

The player not only takes on the role of commander of a US submarine during the period of World War II in the Pacific region . He is also a machinist, navigator and loader at the same time. In critical situations, an overview and routine are required. The player has to fulfill various tasks. As a rule, this is an attack on enemy ship convoys that can be carried out above water or submerged. In the simulation you can act in different areas of the submarine, e.g. B. in the map room, in the headquarters, in the engine room or (when the boat surfaced) on the bridge (command tower).

In 1987 the game was indexed by the Federal Inspectorate for writings harmful to young people due to its content that glorified the war . In 1988 the indexing was lifted again.

In 1990, an improved version came on the market under the name Silent Service II , which was adapted to the graphics capabilities and computing power of the 16-bit computers that were current at the time.

The concept and playful implementation of Silent Service served as a model for many other simulations in the years that followed.
