Its history began in 1901, when the first six officers under the command of Reginald Bacon were assigned to the newly established Submarine Service and the Holland 1 was the first submarine to enter service. At the beginning of the First World War there were already 62 submarines as well as 168 officers and 1,250 men.

Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War , on August 30, 1939, the submarine commander, Rear Admiral Bertram Watson , moved his headquarters from Gosport (near Southampton ) to Aberdour in Scotland . At the time, the fleet owned 60 submarines. After the war, the number was drastically reduced. Currently, the service has six nuclear-powered hunting submarines and four also nuclear-powered submarines of the Vanguard class ballistic missile .
