Mojang Studios (from mojäng , Swedish for gadget ), pronounced [ màjɛŋ ] is a game developer - company , which in October 2010 by Markus "Notch" Persson was founded and Jacob porser. The forerunner was Persson's private company Mojang Specifications , which had been founded in 2002 and published the open-world game Minecraft in May 2009 . In May 2020 the company was renamed Mojang Studios. On its own website, Mojang Studios states that the year it was founded was 2009, in which, however, not the company but the game was founded. The company headquarters are in Stockholm . The company has been part of Microsoft since November 6, 2014 .
history
In 2002, enthusiastic computer gamers, programmers, work colleagues and friends, Markus Persson and Rolf Jansson, decided to found a private game development company, which was named Mojang Specifications at Persson's suggestion . At the end of 2002 they started developing a game called Wurm Online and chose their company Mojang Specifications to publish them . The website mojang.com was registered by Persson on August 4, 2003. In April 2007 Persson left the worm online project and asked Jansson to keep the name Mojang Specifications . Jansson agreed and changed the name of the worm online company to Onetoofree AB . In May 2009 Persson began developing Minecraft, which he published under Mojang Specifications . At the time, Persson was still an employee of a software company and Mojang Specification was a private company that he ran in his spare time. For a short time he afforded a paid employee (the graphic artist Hayden Scott-Baron), but separated from him again in February 2010. As Minecraft became more and more successful, Persson quit his employer and was self-employed from June 1, 2010. At the beginning of August 2010 he published the survival mode multiplayer version of the game that had been announced for many months for the first time ( Survival Multiplayer ). As a result, the sales figures exploded (from 46,000 at the end of July 2010 to 240,000 at the end of September 2010). Persson barely had time to further develop the game because the administrative tasks became overhanded due to the enormous number of players. He was also invited to Washington / USA for business talks with Valve and Bungie at the beginning of September 2010 . Persson decided, however, together with his friend Jakob Porsér, who had his own game idea ( Scrolls ), to set up a company himself, to rent an office and to hire employees to support both games. They were able to win Carl Manneh as managing director, who was only available from the beginning of 2011. Initially, the contracts were still through Mojang Specifications , but discussions with lawyers were already underway. Eventually several companies were founded: Persson founded Notch Enterprises AB , which received 71% of Notch Development AB , while the remaining 21% of the shares went to Porsér and 8% to Manneh. This company eventually founded Mojang AB as a subsidiary . The final papers were signed on October 21, 2010. The first six employees were besides Persson, Porsér and Manneh the programmer Jens Bergensten , the graphic artist Markus Toivonen and Daniel Kaplan as business developer. Within a year the company grew to a size of twelve employees. In 2011, Napster founder and former Facebook president Sean Parker offered to invest in Mojang Studios, but the offer was turned down. By March 2012, the company had net profits of over $ 80 million.
On December 1, 2011, Persson resigned from his position as chief developer of Minecraft to Jens Bergensten to devote himself to the development of other games. On February 28, 2012, the four developers of the unofficial multiplayer modification Bukkit for Minecraft were hired to improve the multiplayer support of the game. End of March 2012 revealed Persson that he was working based space on a game that a little later under the title 0x10 c was introduced. In September 2013, however, he stopped working because of creative blockages.
On September 15, 2014 it was announced that Microsoft would take over Mojang AB for 2.5 billion US dollars. The acquisition was completed on November 6, 2014. Mojang Studios was incorporated into Xbox Game Studios (formerly Microsoft Game Studios, Microsoft Studios). The three shareholders Markus Persson , Jakob Porsér and Carl Manneh left the company. According to an interview with CEO Satya Nadella , the American IT company was primarily concerned with Minecraft , which was to serve as a showcase product for the possibilities of Microsoft's AR glasses HoloLens .
On May 17, 2020, the company announced the renaming to Mojang Studios .
Games
The first commercial game from Mojang Studios, which was successful well before its official completion on November 18, 2011, is Minecraft , an open world game . In addition, developed Mojang from the beginning of 2011, the digital fantasy collectible card game Scrolls and acts as partner for the Jump 'n' Run Cobalt of the likewise Swedish game developer Oxeye Game Studios.
Scrolls was on 18 November 2011 as part of Minecraft - Convention Minecon presented in Las Vegas for the first time to the public. Cobalt had been presented a few months earlier. The alpha version of Cobalt was released on December 16, 2011, and the Scrolls version on July 5. Mojang Studios pursues the same release strategy with Cobalt as with Minecraft , so Cobalt should be released as alpha versions and further developed together with the players. On June 29, 2015, the discontinuation of Scrolls was announced. The development of Cobalt is still progressing, however. The game was released on February 2, 2016 on Steam.
On December 18, 2014, it was announced that Mojang is working on Minecraft: Story Mode in collaboration with Telltale Games . On October 13, 2015, the first episode of Minecraft: Story Mode was released. With the eighth episode published on September 13, 2016, the first season was completed. The first episode of the second season was released on July 11, 2017. The second season consists of a total of five episodes.
Minecraft Dungeons is the first in-house Minecraft spinoff. The Minecraft Dungeons was announced on September 29, 2018 during a MineCon event. Minecraft Earth is an augmented reality (AR) mobile game for Android and iOS. Minecraft Earth was announced in May 2019.
