Minecraft Earth is one of Microsoft advertised augmented reality - computer games , which as a mobile app for Android and iOS on free-to-play is published basis and on the successful sandbox game Minecraft is based with over 126 million players.

Gameplay

The game is based on the style of Minecraft and, similar to the template, focuses on the aspects of building, exploring, collaborating, collecting and creating ( crafting ). Players can use the cell phone camera, the environment for the playing surface tracken with GPS their location on the map report ( Augmented Reality ). The real world is projected onto the mobile phone picture and is supplemented with elements of the game. Together with other players, the player can so z. B. Place virtual blocks on the marked playing area. Another aspect of the game is the collection of resources by moving to them on the map ( location-based game ) and processing them. Buildings can be shared and visited and there is a level and experience point system. Physical landscapes from the real world such as forests and lakes should be included in the game. The size of the blocks can be adjusted to a size up to a playing area of 32 by 32 meters.

In adventure mode the player takes on a specific task, faces challenges, fights against non-player characters or solves puzzles. The adventures should also be able to be experienced in a multiplayer mode.

Development and publication

Microsoft already presented a holographic augmented reality version of Minecraft for the Microsoft HoloLens during the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2015 .

On May 8, 2019, a teaser trailer was published showing scenes about Minecraft Earth.

The game was first announced on May 17, 2019, the 10th anniversary of Minecraft, and will be available as a free-to-play game for Android and iOS smartphones as an anniversary gift to players . The first gameplay material was shown at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in early July 2019.

Minecraft Earth has been in the closed beta phase since July 11, 2019 . The beta phase was attended by around 400,000 players and was activated in 5 cities. At MineCon 2019 it was announced that the game would be released in early access in several countries in October 2019 . The release date was postponed to November 21st. During the early access phase, the game should be regularly improved through player feedback. As of October 2019, Minecraft Earth is playable in Australia , Belgium , Denmark , Germany , Finland , France , Ireland , Italy , Japan , Luxembourg , the Netherlands , Norway , Portugal , Spain and Switzerland . By the end of the year all countries should be activated for game access.

technology

Minecraft Earth uses the map data from the OpenStreetMap project and is based on the Microsoft Azure PlayFab platform for augmented reality. Minecraft Earth is developed using the Bedrock engine, the same game engine that Minecraft is developed with. Android is supported from version 8.0 and with ARCore compatibility and iOS from version 12 and with ARKit compatibility.

reception

Even after its release, the game was compared with the most successful AR game Pokémon Go and a virtual Lego box. Minecraft Earth should also be fun in less urbanized regions and the free-to-play model should be limited to cosmetic changes and dispense with loot boxes . In the hardware test , the iPhone X got warmer and the battery was heavily loaded, which speaks for a high performance requirement of the hardware. The deviations from the advertising trailer in the consumer version, the limited area and spatiality of the mobile phone screen, which cannot be compared with AR glasses like the HoloLens, and inaccuracies in tracking the environment and placing blocks are also criticized. The adventure mode was not fully developed in early tests and still had weaknesses in the representation of the proportions and manageability.
