Markus Alexej Persson (born June 1, 1979 in Stockholm ), also known as Notch (English for "notch"), is a Swedish game developer who became known for the game Minecraft , which he initially developed entirely by himself. In 2010 he founded the Mojang development studio . After selling the studio and the Minecraft license to Microsoft in 2014, Persson appeared on the Forbes list of the richest people in the world for the first time .

Career

Born in Stockholm, Markus Persson spent his childhood in Edsbyn . At the age of seven he started programming on his father's Commodore 128 . By the age of eight he had already written his first text-based action adventure . Today he programs primarily in the Java programming language , although he used to occasionally use C ++ . His professional career as a game developer led him to King.com , where he worked until 2009 and programmed the game Luxor, among other things . At that time he was also working part-time for the online photo platform Jalbum . Persson also co-founded the game Wurm Online .

Since 2008 Persson has regularly participated in the annual Ludum Dare computer game programming competition. His contributions included Breaking the Tower , a minimalist real-time strategy game (RTS), and Minicraft , a two-dimensional action game based on Minecraft . Minecraft first published Persson in 2009 in a playable, paid alpha version, which he continuously developed. With this business model, Persson secured the necessary financial resources for his work on the game. In 2010 he finally founded the Mojang development studio to continue working on Minecraft in a team.

On December 1, 2011, he resigned from his position as chief developer of Minecraft to Jens Bergensten to devote himself to the development of other games. Work on one established in space open world entitled 0x10 c however, he placed ahead again. In September 2014, Persson sold Mojang to Microsoft for $ 2.5 billion.

Persson has been on the Forbes list of billionaires since 2015 , with around $ 1.3 billion in personal wealth.

Political statements

Persson has millions of followers on Twitter . In June 2017 he commented positively on straight pride and declared that opponents of a "hetero-sexual pride day" deserve to be shot. After critical reactions, Persson showed understanding: “So yeah, it's about pride of daring to express, not about pride of being who you are. I get it now. ”In November, Persson wrote that it was“ ok to be white ”. Privileges are an invented category.

In August 2017, Persson had to agree to a series of tweets in which he supported the Pizzagate conspiracy theory.

Private

Persson lived in Stockholm's Södermalm neighborhood before buying a villa in Beverly Hills for $ 70 million in 2014 . From August 13, 2011 to August 15, 2012 Persson was married to Elin Zetterstrand, the sister of the painter Kristoffer Zetterstrand . Persson is a member of the highly gifted Mensa International and a member of the Swedish Pirate Party . Its trademark is a fedora .

In addition to his work as a game developer, he is also a musician in the field of electronic music , working there under the name "Markus Alexej". In June 2014, Persson bought one of five test pressings of the never-released Caustic Window album from 1994 for $ 46,300.
