Richard Allan Bartle (born January 10, 1960 in England ) is a British author , researcher of computer games and related subjects (such as artificial intelligence ) and professor of computer game design at the University of Essex . He is considered a pioneer of the MMORPGs . His best known work is as co-author of the original MUD and author of "Designing Virtual Worlds" . The Bartle test emerged from his research into player types and preferences .

In 1987 Richard Bartle suspended his professorship at the University of Essex to work on MUD2 . He returned to the university in 2006 in a half-job teaching game design in the Electronic Systems Engineering course .

In 2003 he wrote Designing Virtual Worlds , which deals with the development, history and characteristics of virtual worlds (especially MMORPGs ). It was very well received by the specialist audience. He also writes for the influential Terra Nova blog, along with a few other works .

Richard Bartle is currently a board member of Areae Inc. and lives near Colchester, England with his wife Gail and two daughters Jennifer and Madeleine .
