history

In Mar del Plata, spa tourism developed at the end of the 19th century. The sometimes very wealthy guests donated to a significant church to replace the St. Cäcilia chapel. Together with the support of local authorities, the foundation stone was laid on January 18, 1893. The first service was celebrated in the unfinished church in 1897. On February 12, 1905, Monsignor Terrero blessed the finished part of the church.

In 1913, with the help of a substantial donation, the large sacristy, rectory and baptistery were built, and in 1920 the crypt under the main altar followed . 1924 awarded Pope Pius XI. the church the title of a minor basilica . With the creation of the diocese of Mar del Plata by Pope Pius XII. the basilica was elevated to a cathedral in 1957.

description

The cathedral of Mar del Plata was built in the neo-Gothic style. The three-aisled basilica with transept is 67 meters long and 20 meters wide, and the ribbed vaults of the central nave are also 20 meters high. A 60 meter high bell tower overlooks the facade with two external towers. The five bells with a maximum weight of 3075 kg were melted in 1929 by the French bell foundry Paccard . The rose window of the tower has a diameter of three meters. The lower stained glass windows of the nave come from Argentina, the windows of the upper aisle mostly from Metz , France.

The church is decorated with a variety of altars and statues. The main altar was designed by the architect Pedro Benoit and manufactured in France. It has a wooden altarpiece in neo-Gothic style. It shows the Virgin of Luján, Patroness of Argentina, the Saints Simon Peter, Kassia and Johanna Franziska von Chantal around the crucified Christ.

The organ from Giacomo Locatelli from Bergamo , Italy, was installed above the entrance area . About 3,000 pipes in 36 registers are controlled via three manuals and a pedal system . The organ from 1906 was made fully playable again as part of a comprehensive church restoration in 2005 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the church.
