Emotion engine
The Emotion Engine is the processor (CPU) of Sony's PlayStation 2 , which is still the world's best-selling game console . This CPU was jointly developed by Toshiba and Sony and is based on a MIPS core. The chip was also installed in the first models of the PlayStation 3 in order to achieve the native backward compatibility (compatibility of the original PS2 game CD / DVDs on the PS3) with the PlayStation 2, which still exists in these versions.
technology
The chip is based on an extended MIPS R5900 core, on which there are two vector processors (VU0 and VU1) in addition to the actual CPU . There is also an MPEG-2 decoder on the chip. The processor is operated with a clock frequency of 294.912 MHz and has a 16 kB instruction cache and an 8 kB data cache . The internal data bus is 128 bits wide and clocked at 150 MHz. The external DRDRAM is connected via two 16-bit buses that are clocked at 400 MHz. The (theoretical) raw performance of the processor is approx. 6.2 GigaFLOPS (floating point operations / sec).
On the die there are around 10.5 million transistors on an area of 240 mm². The chip was manufactured by Sony and Toshiba from 1999 to the end of 2012 using the CMOS process.
