Killzone is a first-person shooter developed by Dutch game developer Guerrilla Games and published by Sony in 2004 for the PlayStation 2 . Before it was released, the game was seen as Sony's answer to Microsoft's Halo video game series and was referred to as the "Halo Killer" by various sites, such as the American Official PlayStation Magazine .

Although various game magazines gave Killzone mediocre ratings after its release, the game was still a commercial success with more than a million units sold. In Poland, Killzone was the best-selling video game of its time. A successor to the PlayStation Portable was released with Killzone: Liberation and for the PlayStation 3 Killzone 2 was released on February 25, 2009 . The version for Playstation 3 was the largest multimedia project in the Netherlands to date in 2006 with a budget of € 16 million and 120 people involved in the game.

On October 23, 2012, Killzone was released on the PlayStation 3 under the title Killzone HD . The PS3 version offers slightly improved graphics and can be purchased separately as a download via PlayStation Network . The game is also part of the Killzone Trilogy , which should be released in Germany and Austria on October 24th. However, the release never took place in these countries.

Backstory

The story of the game was written by English science fiction writer Joe Dever . It is about a fictional war between humans and the "Helghast" who fight for a space colony. The depiction of this Helghast has strong similarities to the police uniforms in the Japanese manga Jin Roh and thus to uniforms from the time of National Socialism . Originally, however, they go back to the Helghast of the medieval fantasy role-playing book Einsamer Wolf , which Joe Dever wrote together with Gary Chalk and published a total of 28 parts (12 of them with German translation). The Helghast use Blitzkrieg tactics, and an unconditional surrender of the Helghast in a previous war is described, which resulted in the demilitarization of the war and which the fictitious public perceived as a disgrace through propaganda. The Helghast are humans themselves, but who have been genetically modified by staying on their home planet Helghan, a former earth colony. As a result, they can no longer tolerate the atmosphere on planets that are conducive to humans and therefore use breathing masks.
