Jin-Roh (Alternative title: Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade , jap. 人狼 , Jinro ., Dt "Man-Wolf") is a Japanese anime - political thriller from 1999, from a script by Mamoru Oshii . This used themes from his manga Kerberos Panzer Cop ( Hellhounds: Panzer Cops in Manga Power ) and from several real-life films that he had directed.

The anime takes a look at the various personalities behind politically motivated terrorism and shows that individuals can make moral decisions even in totalitarian societies. It is also an appropriately adapted adaptation of the fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood .

action

The film takes place in the fictional world of the Kerberos saga , in an economically flourishing Japan of the 1950s, ten years after Germany won World War II and has now also ruled Japan . The population is subjugated and violent clashes between the police and insurgents are the order of the day. A terrorist group called "The Sect" stands out from this chaos with assassinations and terrorist attacks. In order to hunt down this internal enemy without using the military, the government founds the “Capital Police”. Its core is the special unit Kerberos, which takes action against the rebels with armored combat gear equipped with Wehrmacht technology (e.g. MG 42 ). A secret espionage organization called the "Wolf Brigade" (Jin-Roh) developed unnoticed within the special unit.

Kazuki Fuse is a member of the Special Forces and one of the best. During a street battle, the special unit chases a group of terrorists in the sewer system because it is from there that they distribute their bombs and specially prepared Molotov cocktails . Fuse hires one of the bomb couriers, a young girl who is carrying a bomb. Instead of shooting her true to his instructions, however, he hesitates and asks the girl the reason for her action. When more soldiers arrive, the frightened girl detonates the bomb and blows herself up with it. Fuse survives unharmed thanks to a combat suit, but is suspended from duty in the unit after the court hearing and sent back to the academy.

Apparently he is now beginning to doubt his actions in the special unit and to question his moral ideas. In nightmares he processes the situation in the sewer system. He investigates the suicide bomber and visits her grave. There he meets her alleged sister Kei Amemiya, for whom he has sympathy and with whom he begins a loose relationship. In reality, however, Amemiya is an arrested rebel who, like the girl who was killed, is one of the “Little Red Riding Hoods” responsible for transporting bombs. The security department of the capital city police wants to use Amemiya to convict the Jin-Roh organization by means of their - only initially staged - relationship with Fuse.

Amemiya gives Fuse the German fairy tale book Little Red Riding Hood when they meet for the first time . This fairy tale, an archaic and bloody version compared to the version handed down by the Brothers Grimm , becomes a kind of red thread in the film and also provides information about the relationship between the two main characters. Fuse acts similarly to the wolf and is not recognized by Amemiya, Little Red Riding Hood, as a loyal member of the Jin-Roh until now.

At a secret meeting, senior police and police in the capital decide to disempower the special unit so that the two authorities can be merged. Fuse is warned of persecutors by a member of the security department and former friend of Fuse who works with the police. A short time later, Amemiya asks Fuse, as part of an action staged by the security department, because she is being persecuted. Fuse goes to her where police agents are already waiting to take out Fuse and supposedly Amemiya as well. However, he can escape with her. She joins him and they both seek refuge in an amusement park, where their relationship deepens.

After this action, Fuse and Amemiya are wanted by the police and the capital city police with an execution order. However, Amemiya carries a tracking device with her that is supposed to lead the agents to the wolf brigade. When Fuse and Amemiya later appear in the sewers for a Jin-Roh meeting, the police and the security department want to kill the members of the secret organization. This intention was in turn expected by the Jin-Roh and is now to be exploited to kill the leading agents of the police and capital police and thus ensure the continued existence of the special unit. Only now does Amemiya find out that Fuse belongs to the Wolf Brigade. With the help of a special unit combat suit, Fuse manages to shoot all agents including his former friend.

In order not to endanger the existence of the Jin-Roh, Fuse is now supposed to shoot Amemiya, because she knows about the existence of the organization and could reveal it in the event of a later liberation. Fuse has to choose between his love for Amemiya and loyalty to his organization. When Amemiya throws herself sobbing at him and quotes Little Red Riding Hood, he realizes the necessity of her death and shoots her. Fuse's further fate remains open, the film closes with the commandant's words "and then the wolf devoured poor Little Red Riding Hood".

style

Computer graphics are hardly used in the anime Jin-Roh - almost all scenes are hand-drawn. The depiction of the darkness and the moods that are built up in the twilight, night and underground scenarios are striking. They are mainly characterized by the use of strong light and shadow effects.

Reviews

“Impressive animé from the pen of 'Ghost in the Shell' creator Mamoru Oshii, which is not set in a pure fantasy world, but also convinces as a complex political thriller. The grown-up film, not stingy on bloodthirsty scenes with psychologically very sophisticated characters, tells an unusual love story at the same time. "

- Focus: film

"In terms of design as well as thematically highly ambitious science fiction political thriller in the form of a cartoon that takes up the topic of political terror in an appealing way, whereby it always tries to question traditional values."

“Jin-Roh is entertainment for adults and is characterized by a very gloomy atmosphere and sophisticated subject matter. It's not the easiest fare, but it shouldn't be missed. "

Awards

In 1999 Jin-Roh was awarded the Fantasy Film Prize at the International Portuguese Film Festival Fantasporto .

Furthermore, the film was awarded the title Valuable by the FBW .
