action

There are two types of vampires: Moroi and Strigoi. Moroi are mortal and good vampires, while the Strigoi are vicious, undead, and dangerous. You can become a Strigoi in two ways: Either you are forced to do so by force of the bite of a Strigoi, or you choose to do so voluntarily as a Moroi and intentionally kill a person while drinking. Strigoi try everything to destroy the Moroi, which is why the Dhampire (half human, half Moroi) are trained as guardians to protect the Moroi from them.

17-year-old Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir. She is trained in fighting techniques at the Vampire Academy St. Vladimir as she has to protect her best friend and Moroi princess Vasilissa Dragomir (nickname: Lissa). Lissa is the next queen to be chosen from one of the twelve royal families and has a special element (water, air, fire or earth). Rose and Lissa flee the Academy after Lissa's parents and brother were killed in a traffic accident and strange events occurred at the Academy. Rose was also killed in the accident, but Lissa managed to bring her back from the dead. Since then the two have been connected and Rose knows what is going on in Lissa's thoughts and feelings - this is called shadow kissing. At this point Lissa has no idea that she has specialized in the rare element "spirit". Her teacher Mrs. Karp discovered the element and warned the two of them at the time (before they flee).

After a year on the run, Rose and Lissa are brought back to the Academy by Dimitri Belikov, guardian of St. Vladimir. The director Ellen Kirova is appalled that Rose ran away with Lissa and wants to expel her from the Academy. Dimitri, however, is of the opinion that Rose could become a good guardian and thus ensures that she is allowed to stay at the school. Since Rose is far behind with her training, she gets Dimitri as a mentor and trainer. During the training, the two keep getting closer and fall in love. At the same time, Lissa has to realize that her status as a princess is gone, and she is being ignored by everyone. She also has to realize that her ex-boyfriend Aaron has a new friend named Mia Rinaldi who hates Lissa. Lissa's brother had an affair with Mia, but she wanted more and was dumped by him. Over time, Lissa befriends the outsider Christian Ozera, whose parents were Strigoi. The two get closer and - after hating each other in the meantime - become a couple.

With the return to the Academy, the strange events of the past also return. So Lissa's room is smeared with blood and her cat and other animals are murdered. With her element, Lissa manipulates her popularity again and therefore clashes with Rose. She found out that Mrs. Karp no longer works for the Academy. She investigates and learns that after the departure of Rose and Lissa, Mrs. Karp went crazy, voluntarily transformed from a Moroi to a Strigoi, and eventually escaped from the Academy. Rose also learns that Mrs. Karp also masters the element "spirit" and has gone mad because of it, and has turned into a Strigoi because of the pain the element brings with it. Rose is concerned and warns Lissa about it.

At the Academy Ball, Rose reveals Mia's secret as Bluthure, and she and two other Moroi confess that she smeared Lissa's room. At the same time, Lissa is kidnapped by Victor Dashkov, a longtime family friend and the rightful aspirant king. Victor wants Lissa to heal him with her element so that he can ascend the royal throne, which he was denied because of his illness. That's why he killed the animals; to see how far Lissa's element is. With the help of her tape, Rose can locate Lissa and with the help of Dimitri and Christian she manages to free Lissa and stop Victor. But the four did not expect that Victor's daughter Natalie, who is a friend of Rose and Lissa, has turned into a Strigoi. But she is killed by Dimitri and Rose. Through this Rose learns that Dimitri is reciprocating her love, but the two cannot be together because of the age difference and because they will both later be Lissa's guardians.

The film ends when Sonya Karp announces the attack on St. Vladimir in the nearby mountains of her Strigoi army.
