content

There are two types of vampires. The vicious, undead Strigoi and the mortal, civilized Moroi. There are two ways to become a Strigoi. Either you are forcibly made into it by the bite of a Strigoi, or you choose to do so voluntarily as a Moroi and intentionally kill a person while drinking. Moroi also need blood, but unlike Strigoi, they usually don't kill the people whose blood they drink. They employ donors, people who willingly let Moroi bite them, as the bite releases endorphins in the donor's body. The Moroi have their own government, a monarchy with twelve royal families and a king chosen from among the royal families. The oldest member of his respective dynasty is always given the title "Prince" or "Princess". And then there is Dhampire, half human, half Moroi. You don't drink blood. Dhampires can only reproduce with Moroi. Therefore, they can be trained as guards at the academies and protect the Moroi from attacks by the Strigoi in order to ensure the survival of their race. For female dhampires, however, there is another line of business: prostitution. Blood whores sleep with Moroi for a fee and let them drink their blood in the process, which is pretty much the dirtiest and most despicable thing they could do. Nevertheless, more and more Dhampires are taking up this profession, as a result of which the number of female guardians is greatly reduced.

Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir is a Moroi princess and the last of her family, which is why her protection is particularly important. Her best friend Rosemary "Rose" Hathaway, dhampir and novice guardian, is always there for her and takes on a protective role. There is a mysterious bond between the two through which Rose can read Lissa's mind and feel her feelings. Rose is “shadow kissed”, which means that she was brought back from the realm of the dead by a spirit user (in this case Lissa, which is why the bond between them exists). After some strange incidents at the Vampire Academy, the two run away and get by on their own. After two years on the run, they are finally caught and taken back to the academy. Since Rose is far behind with her training, she gets the good-looking guardian Dimitri Belikov as a mentor, with whom she falls in love. The strange events at the academy never end and Lissa is finally kidnapped. With the help of her tape, Rose is able to locate Lissa and save her from a terrible fate. Rose learns that Dimitri is in love, but they cannot be together because of the age difference and because they will both later be Lissa's guardians.

Creation and publication

Richelle Mead began writing the novel in early 2006. Her agent suggested that she write a vampire youth novel . Until then, Richelle had only written in the field of paranormal / supernatural romances, but never for a young audience.

The main character of the novel should not be a vampire, but a person who has to do with vampires. In the story there were two teenagers, a boy and a girl. Mead mentions on her blog that an old family tradition was for the two to be married and that they first met at the beginning of the book. One of them was in danger and the other took on a protective role. But she couldn't remember who was protecting whom or who was the vampire.

The story was changed several times during the year. Mead even gave up writing for a while and started another book, which she found easier. It received the title Storm Daughter (original title: Storm Born ). After putting the Blood Sisters manuscript aside for six months, she decided to try again. She chose to write in first person and cross out various subplots so she could focus on Rose, Lissa, and Dimitri. In addition, Rose became a dhampir.

The Vampire Academy books have been published in the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Russia, Poland, Slovenia, Brazil, Turkey, Hungary and Austria.
