School of Seven Bells (or SVIIB ) was a dream pop / shoegaze band from Brooklyn , New York . It was founded in 2007 by Benjamin Curtis and twin sisters Alejandra Deheza and Claudia Deheza. Claudia Deheza left the band in 2010. Benjamin Curtis died in 2013 at the age of 35 after developing cancer. During this illness, however, he still wrote many new songs and recorded demos, which were completed by Alejandra after his death and released posthumously in 2016 as the fourth studio album SVIIB.

The band name is derived from a Brazilian school for the art of pickpocketing .

history

Benjamin Curtis (previously known as the guitarist for the alternative rock band Secret Machines ) met twins Alejandra and Claudia Deheza (both previously with On! Air! Library!) During a support tour for the band Interpol . The three decided to end their commitments to their old bands and start a home studio together.

The band had an unorthodox songwriting process that started with lyrics, which was then complemented by music. Curtis said that this process is the most important part of the band, "everything else is accompaniment". A before and after example was hosted by NPR's Day to Day program .

Her debut single My Cabal was released in May 2007 on the British label Sonic Cathedral. A 12 "/ digital EP, Face to Face on High Places , followed in September 2007 on the Table of the Elements label, in addition to a single from producer Prefuse 73 entitled Class of 73 Bells , on which the band was represented. It This was followed by a tour with Blonde Redhead and Prefuse 73. The debut album, Alpinisms , followed a year later, which was presented for the first time in Europe on a UK tour with Bat for Lashes , The song also appeared on compilations by Adult Swim and Chain Ghostly International.

The second album, Disconnect from Desire , was released in July 2010 and was celebrated by Pitchfork magazine . During the accompanying tour they also covered the song Kiss Them for Me by the British band Siouxsie and the Banshees . The band was awarded the Aposta Internacional at MTV Video Music Brasil 2010 . Claudia Deheza left the band for personal reasons.

In February 2012 the third album Ghostory was released, for the first time as a duo. It contained several singles including The Night , Lafaye and Scavenger . The EP Put Your Sad Down followed in November of the same year .

In February 2013, Curtis was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma after several weeks with symptoms . He did not recover and died on December 29, 2013 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

The last track Curtis produced is a cover of Joey Ramone 's I Got Knocked Down (But I'll Get Up) , and was released in June 2014. The fourth and final album, SVIIB , was due after Curtis' death Alejandra Deheza finished alone and released in February 2016, including the single, Open Your Eyes .

style

School of Seven Bells' music has mostly been described as indie rock , dream pop , shoegaze and electronic , the sound described as dreamy, atmospheric and their lyrics abstract.

According to his own statements, Benjamin Curtis' musical influences were mainly to be found in the music of Kraftwerk , Wire , Beyoncé , New Order and Blonde Redhead , and he also adored the musicians Joni Mitchell and Robert Wyatt . He once said in an interview "We're huge fans of pop, too, mainly because we're huge fans of smart songwriting" (We love pop so much because we like elegant songwriting).
