Codes and Keys is the eighth studio album by indie rock band Death Cab for Cutie . It was released on May 31, 2011, but was previously fully available on the National Public Radio website.
Emergence
Due to the private life of the band members, it was not possible to continuously produce or record the album. B. Lead singer Benjamin Gibbard shortly before. The 11 or 13 songs were recorded in eight different studios, and they never stayed in one studio for more than two weeks. The album was followed by a short tour as the band members preferred to focus on their family life.
style
There was a lot of experimentation with the software Logic Pro and piano or keyboards , so that the guitars take a back seat. The changes in Gibbard's private life can be seen in the lyrics and music, they seem much brighter and happier than all the other albums. Songwriter Gibbard said in an interview:
"There's a level of self-loathing in [ Narrow Stairs ] that I'm a bit of embarrassed about now [...] It's a really dark record. I didn't want to make that record again. I didn't want to write those songs again. "

criticism
In Australia , the album reached number seven on the ARIA album charts.
“Nonetheless,“ Codes and Keys ”is an album that you can count among your favorites for 2011, that you can safely run through without hitting the skip button, that you can recommend without embarrassing yourself. Not a timelessly great album, but a good album that makes you really happy for almost three quarters of an hour. "
"But at core, these are resplendent songs, the sound of a sad-sack acquiescing that life might be pretty awesome after all"
"At the core of this magnificent song are the sound of a bad guy who admits that life might be whole after all pretty is"
