LA Without a Map
LA Without a Map is a Finnish - British - French tragic comedy from 1998 . Directed by Mika Kaurismäki , who also wrote the screenplay with Richard Rayner - based on his novel Los Angeles Without a Map (German title Planlos in Los Angeles ). The leading roles are starring David Tennant and Vinessa Shaw, as well as Julie Delpy and Vincent Gallo .

Richard is a Scottish undertaker. When he met the unemployed American actress Barbara in the cemetery in Bradford , he suspected that he no longer wanted to maintain his relationship with the daughter of a local businessman. Barbara, with whom he spent an unforgettable day, impressed him so much that he broke out of his monotonous life and followed her to Los Angeles , convinced that she is the woman he has always been waiting for. Like her friend Julie, Barbara works there in a luxury Japanese restaurant and is initially not very enthusiastic about his visit. She's trying to break into the acting business and has to accept a lot of empty promises, including those from director Patterson, who kept promising to make her big.
Since Richard cannot afford to rent a property in a good area of Los Angeles, he has to be content with an apartment in a wicked area where he is next to the sloping Moss, who cleans swimming pools, which Richard does too . His new life takes on a chaotic development. After all, he gradually succeeds in conquering Barbara's heart, which even leads to a marriage in Las Vegas . But Richard's jealousy and an immoral offer that Barbara receives stand in the way of their relationship, so that it comes to a breakup. Richard, who always had literary ambitions, tried his hand at scriptwriting, but initially failed grandly and returned to his old life and home.
To his great surprise, one day after a funeral ceremony in the cemetery, Barbara stands in front of him. She has a script he wrote with her and tells him it was accepted, which is Richard's second big surprise of the day. When he asks Barbara how things should go on now, she explains - and that is the best news for him - that after all, films are being made in England and that she will stay with him now.

Presented by Pierre Assouline and Euro American Films, the film was produced by Marianna Films (Helsinki), Dan Films (London) and Euro American Films (Paris). It was created in collaboration with The Arts Concil of England, Baltic Media, The Yorkshire Media Production Agency and The Finnish Film Foundation. It was shot in Los Angeles , Inglewood ( California ), Las Vegas and Bradford ( England ).
At the beginning of the film, Barbara and Richard watch the tragic comedy Das Leben der Bohème , a film by Mika Kaurismäki's brother Aki , in the cinema. During the film, Richard chats with Johnny Depp from time to time, who gets out of a movie poster and gives him valuable advice.

The world premiere of the film took place on September 11, 1998 at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada. On January 31, 1999, it was screened at the Gothenburg Film Festival in Sweden. It was also published in 1999 in Norway, France, Finland, United Kingdom and on September 16, 1999 in Germany.
In 2000 he was seen in Japan, Australia (video premiere), Denmark, Switzerland (German region), Italy and Spain. It had its video premiere in Iceland in 2001; in October of the same year it was screened at the Tbilisi International Film Festival in Georgia. In December 2002 he was one of the contributions to the event "Kaurismäki: Vodka, Frío y Rock'n Roll". It was also published in Argentina, Brazil, Hungary, Poland and Russia.
The film was released by Universum Film GmbH on May 29, 2009 in a German language version on DVD.
Reviews
The lexicon of international films found: “A light-handed, light-handed comedy peppered with film quotes, which is mainly entertaining thanks to the witty leading actors. The numerous cameo appearances of well-known film greats also make the film a delicious charade. "
Cinema magazine saw it differently and said the director seemed to "believe in the power and success of European cinema". However, his ideas about Los Angeles are “so conventional” that he, like his protagonist, “inevitably fails”. Conclusion: "Kaurismäkis LA is not worth a trip".
The magazine Prisma wrote that the "light summer comedy with beautiful weird characters and good actors" was "not a particularly exciting film, but one with charm". Restrictively, it was said that the director quoted in places “his brother's work too intrusively”, but “some nice bizarre ideas would make up for it”. The representations by Vincent Gallo and Julie Delpy were particularly praised.
For Kino.de , the film presented itself as an “airy, relaxed and easy love story against the background of the film business in LA, which Mika Kaurismäki, Aki's prolific brother, presented with humor and laconic wit by playing two lovebirds in the city of Angels against the professional cynics ”. It was further stated:“ A light-footed love story that Aki brother Mika Kaurismäki uses for a satire on the film business in Hollywood. ”
