Hermes Schallautzer
Hermes Schallautzer (* 1503 in Vienna ; † March 21, 1561 ) was mayor of Vienna from 1538 to 1539 and city judge from 1540 to 1543 . His great-grandfather Andre Hiltprant was mayor of Vienna.
Hermes Schallautzer came from an economically and politically important family in Vienna. He was the builder of the new city fortifications after the Turkish siege of 1529 and worked on the construction of the Kaiserebersdorf Palace , as well as on the drawing up of Augustin Hirschvogel's city map , which was related to his construction work. In 1546 he became royal councilor and on March 17, 1547 Ferdinand I entrusted him with the construction management for the fortifications of Vienna. From this point on he was also superintendent of the royal buildings. In this capacity he initiated the construction of the (old) arsenal, the Carinthian bastion (1548) and finally the Löwelbastei.
Together with his nephew, the humanist Wolfgang Lazius , he collected Roman inscriptions that he found during the construction work, and enjoyed such an extensive lapidary .
In 1906, Schallautzerstraße was named after him in Vienna's Innere Stadt (1st district) .
