Romanesque collegiate church of St. Gertrud (11th / 13th century)

The Monastery Nivelles was founded in 640 by Itta, the wife of Pippin the Elder , in what is now the city Nivelles founded, Belgium. A settlement has arisen around this monastery. After the death of Gertrude , the first abbess and daughter of the founder of the monastery, in 659 it became a place of pilgrimage .

A document from the year 972 shows that Nivelles Abbey owned 14,000 mans of land.

In 1789 the monastery was dissolved, which meant an economic decline for the place. In 1940 the old town and the monastery were largely destroyed in a bombing.
