Schneekoppe is a German wholesale company for food . The core range includes gluten-free products, which are important for people with celiac disease , low-calorie confectionery for diabetics and overweight people, as well as natural food .

Today the company sells over 120 products (including muesli, muesli bars, fruit slices, vegetable juices, apple cider vinegar, soy drinks, sweet spreads and vegetarian pies) and is the market leader in the field of diet products for diabetics.

history

General

The origin of the company lies in a mail order business for linseed and linseed oil , which Fritz Klein, who was interested in wholefood nutrition and was born near Breslau in 1889, founded in 1927 at the foot of the Giant Mountains . In 1945 he was expelled from his home country , fled with his family to north-west Germany and settled in Bremen . He began selling health food products from Silesia and in 1953 registered the Schneekoppe umbrella brand , under which 30 products were initially marketed. The name of the company was given by the highest mountain in the Giant Mountains, the Schneekoppe . The name was chosen in memory of Klein's earlier residence and as a symbol of the natural purity of the products. The stylized profile of the mountain has long been part of the company logo, even if it has been modified several times over the years.

After the shortage economy of the post-war period in West Germany and Austria was replaced by the " feeding wave " of the 1950s and affluent diseases such as obesity and diabetes increased, Schneekoppe recognized a promising market in this and in the mid-1960s added products for diabetics to its range for the first time (low-calorie products and those with a low glycemic load ). Since then, Schneekoppe has also been marketing muesli - as the first in the German and Austrian food trade - (the word is written by the company itself as “muesli”, like the Swiss Birchermüesli).

In the mid / late 1960s, the company expanded to Austria and has since been divided into a German and an Austrian branch:

  • Schneekoppe GmbH & Co. KG (Schneekoppe Germany)
  • Schneekoppe Austria Handels GmbH

In the 1970s, the company created a radio advertisement in which the brand name was shouted like an echoruf in the mountains, with a very elongated "e" and strong echo. Thanks to its high recognition value, this memorable reputation contributed significantly to the very high level of awareness of the brand, which continues to this day (98%, according to other information 87.6%).

The company has also been active in Eastern Europe since 1992. Vienna is the sales center for the entire Eastern European region. The products are available in around 25 countries worldwide. The export quota is around 50%.

In 1996 the company, then known as Schneekoppe-Reform GmbH , was taken over by Laurens Spethmann Holding AG & Co., which at the time had been newly created from the company holdings of Laurens Spethmann (including Ostfriesische Tee Gesellschaft with the Milford, Onno Behrends, Messmer brand ), and integrated into the Healthy Eating business area, which has existed since the 1980s. At that time, Schneekoppe had 1200 employees in Germany and 400 abroad.

On January 1, 2007, the baked goods manufacturer Pauly Biskuit AG from Dessau , which belongs to the entrepreneur Christoph Pauly, acquired the two sub-companies and on February 13, 2007 brought them to the newly founded Schneekoppe Lifestyle Holding (LSH). In the same year Pauly sold 51% to Auric Capital Group AG (ACG) of the Krefeld entrepreneur Gerald Wagener, who had been friends with Pauly for many years . Pauly Biskuit AG has been a contract manufacturer of many Schneekoppe products for years . In autumn 2007, Wagener acquired the two Schneekoppe companies as sole owners and began to modernize the brand image and expand the sales markets to Eastern Europe. and moved the headquarters of the holding company from Stendal to Krefeld .

Since the beginning of 2009 there has been a separate warehouse ("Fitness Outlet") in Berlin-Reinickendorf . In cooperation with the Südwest-Verlag several cookery and baking books for diabetic food have been published in the past.

With effect from July 1, 2009, Delvena Lebensmittel-Kontor GmbH , a subsidiary of the Cologne-based Pfeifer & Langen Group (third largest German sugar producer), has a 25.1% stake in LSH. A subsidiary of Delvena, Bio-Zentrale Naturprodukte GmbH , is a major marketer of organic products to German food retailers.

On September 14, 2010, the company announced that it would issue a bond for EUR 10 million with a term of 5 years.

On August 6, 2014, Selva Aurea GmbH , a company owned by the shareholder Gerald Wagener, took over all the shares in Change Capital Partners LLP in Schneekoppe Verwaltungs GmbH , the holding company of the Schneekoppe Group. Gerald Wagener thus owns a total of 83% of the holding. Peter Kölln AG and company boss Markus Klein take care of the rest.

In August 2014, Schneekoppe Lifestyle GmbH applied to the Tostedt district court (Lower Saxony) to initiate protective shield proceedings .

On August 13, 2014, the sole limited partner, Schneekoppe Lifestyle GmbH , was renamed Schneekoppe GmbH. The insolvency proceedings for the assets of Schneekoppe GmbH were opened at the beginning of November 2014 under self-administration .

On January 16, 2018 it was announced that the former professional soccer player Philipp Lahm will become majority owner of Schneekoppe.

Since May 2, 2019, 15 organic products from the Schneekoppe brand have been available at Aldi .

Company figures

In the 2006 financial year, the company reported consolidated sales of around EUR 93 million; according to other information, sales of EUR 300 million were achieved. In 2013, Schneekoppe GmbH & Co. KG generated sales of 15.05 million euros, which led to an annual deficit of 1.64 million euros.

Others

A bond that the company issued in 2011 was sold out after just 17 days. The equity ratio was less than 12 percent.
