Álvaro Odriozola Arzallus (born December 14, 1995 in San Sebastián ) is a Spanish football player . The right defender made the leap into professional football at Real Sociedad San Sebastián and moved to Real Madrid in the summer of 2018 . He was only used irregularly there and was loaned to FC Bayern Munich in January 2020 . In 2017 and 2018, Odriozola made four international appearances for the Spanish national team . At the 2018 World Cup in Russia , he was in the Spanish squad, but was not used.

Odriozola joined the youth department of Real Sociedad San Sebastián at the age of ten . In the 2013/14 season he had his first appearances for the B-team in the third-class Segunda División B and played nine times by the end of the season. Odriozola, who was more at home in the right attacking midfield in his youth, was retrained as a right-back in the B team and established himself as a regular player in the following seasons. In January 2017, Odriozola was pulled up to the first team. On January 16, 2017, he made his debut in a 2-0 away win against FC Málaga in the Primera División . By the end of the season, Odriozola made 15 appearances and finished sixth in the final table with Real Sociedad , which qualified him and his team for the Europa League . In the 2017/18 season he was a regular player and made 35 league appearances and six games in the Europa League , in which he scored his first competitive goal in professional football on February 15, 2018 in a 2-2 draw against Zenit Saint Petersburg .

For the season 2018/19 Odriozola joined Real Madrid . In his first season he was there in 22 of a total of 57 competitive games, in the 2019/20 season he played only five competitive games for Real by the turn of the year. Ultimately, he had the disadvantage of the more experienced Dani Carvajal in the right-back position. In January 2020, Odriozola was loaned to FC Bayern Munich until the end of the season in order to remedy a defensive personnel bottleneck. Since the end of the season had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Odriozola's contract was extended until August 31, so that he could play the cup final (July 4) and the 2019/20 Champions League season (August) . He made five competitive appearances and won the triple of championship , DFB Cup and Champions League with the team .

National team

Odriozola made his debut on March 23, 2017 in a 3-1 win in the friendly against Denmark in the Spanish U21 national team . In June 2017 he took part with the selection at the U21 European Championship in Poland and was used once in the tournament. With his team he reached the final and lost to the German team with 0: 1.

On October 6, 2017, Odriozola played for the first time in the senior national team in a 3-0 win in the World Cup qualifier against Albania . On June 3, 2018, he scored the 1-0 opening goal in a 1-1 draw against Switzerland . A few days earlier, Odriozola had been appointed to the Spanish squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia by national coach Julen Lopetegui . In the tournament, which Spain played under the direction of Fernando Hierro , Odriozola was not used. He has not been called up to the national team since the World Cup.
