The Puccinia Malvacearum ( Puccinia malvacearum ) is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the mallow family of the Malvae tribe . Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It is spread all over the world.

features

Macroscopic features

Mallow rust can only be recognized with the naked eye by means of the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.

Microscopic features

The mycelium of growing Malvenrosts as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Its parts grow on the upper side of the leaf and are about 200  µm wide. The fungus does not develop spermogonia , aecia or uredia . The parts of the species growing mostly on the underside of the host leaves and sepals as well as young fruits are brown, uncovered and cushion-shaped. The light yellow teliospores are one- to three-celled, usually short spindle to short club-shaped and 35–63 × 17–24 µm in size. Their stem is colorless and up to 150 µm long.

distribution

The well-known distribution area of the mallow rust covers the whole world. Originally it was limited to Chile , later the species was introduced to other parts of the world.

ecology

The host plants of the mallow rust are various species of mallow , marshmallow and malvastrum . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species has a microcyclic development cycle (it only forms parts) and does not change host.
