Sachsenstein Castle (Lower Saxony)
Sachsenstein Castle

The castle Sachsensteinblick in Bad Sachsa later let Salian Emperor Henry IV to secure his rule in Harzvorland build. It is one of those eight castles that Lampert von Hersfeld attests to as early as 1073.

location

The Northeim – Nordhausen railway line and the Karst hiking trail pass the former castle.

description

Wall remains of the keep.

The remains of the wall of the 5400 square meter main castle lie on a mountain spur . A round tower 13.5 meters in diameter and two meters thick walls forms the center. The gate chamber in the north was flanked by two hexagonal towers. This arrangement of the components has no parallels in the 11th century. The masonry technique used at Sachsenstein with a shell made of layered masonry, the solid core partly in herringbone technique with sectional joints, can be found in the Salian castles from the middle of the 11th century.

This herringbone pattern in the brickwork has been faithfully restored. It is believed that Sachsenstein Castle was not completed. An overgrown section of fortification was exposed between 1891 and 1893.

history

Foreign ministerials who collected taxes from the Saxon and Thuringian residents sat on such fortified castles. This led to the uprising of the Saxons against Heinrich IV, at whose head Otto von Northeim stood . In the Peace of Gerstungen in 1074 the king had to commit to razing the castles. After the Harzburg was sacked by the Saxon rural population, the conflict broke out again and on June 9, 1075 led to the battle of Homburg an der Unstrut , which Heinrich won. In October the Saxons finally and unconditionally capitulated at Spier.

However, the castles in the Harz Mountains were not renewed, so Sachsenstein Castle is in ruins . Walkenried , which has been occupied since 1085, was a presumed farmyard of the castle .

Others

According to the Lower Saxony Monument Protection Act , the Sachsenstein has been included in the list of cultural monuments and has been part of the “ Priorteich / Sachsenstein ” nature reserve since 1949 .
