The Peace of Gerstungen was concluded on February 2, 1074 in Gerstungen Castle on the Werra . He placed the reinstatement of Duke Otto von Northeim into the Duchy of Bavaria on King Heinrich IV . The latter had successfully placed himself at the head of the Saxon uprising in 1073. King Heinrich IV had to flee from the besieged Harzburg and humbly consent to the razing of his castles in the Harz , which was requested in Gerstungen , including the Sachsenburg near Bad Sachsa , which was only built in 1070 .

Since all the Upper German dukes opposed the reinstatement of Northeimer, Otto remained stripped of his office in Bavaria. From then on Otto continued to be a dangerous opponent of the king and his former subordinates in Bavaria.
