Gerald of Ostia

Gerald von Ostia OSB (* before 1040 in Regensburg ; † December 7, 1077 in Rome ) was Bishop of Ostia , cardinal and is a saint of the Catholic Church .

Life

Gerald taught at the cathedral school in Regensburg and entered the Benedictine monastery of Cluny in 1061, together with his friend Ulrich (1029-1093, saint), and after a short stay he was chosen to be prior . In 1067 he was called to Rome by Pope Alexander II (1061-1073) and created cardinal bishop (compare creation of a cardinal ) and consecrated bishop . He then succeeded Petrus Damiani OSB, who died in 1072, as Bishop of Ostia.

Papal legate and mediator

He was sent by the Holy See as a papal legate and stayed in France and Spain as well as in Germany . In the investiture controversy he acted as a mediator between Pope Gregory VII (1073-1085) and King Henry IV. In February 1067, Gerald was captured by supporters of the king in Lombardy . He died on December 7, 1077, part of his relics is kept in the Cathedral of Velletri . His - not required - day of remembrance is also December 7th.
