The BorgWarner Ludwigsburg GmbH (until December 2009: BERU AG) is an automotive supplier headquartered in Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg . The subsidiary of the American company BorgWarner is the leading supplier of diesel engine glow plugs with a world market share of over 40% . It also produces ignition coils , ignition cables and electrical auxiliary heaters .

history

Beru was founded in 1912 by Julius Friedrich Behr and Albert Ruprecht as "Auto-Armaturen- und Kühlerfabrik BERU Behr & Ruprecht, Ludwigsburg" with the corporate objective of "Manufacturing & sales of technical specialties". The Beru product range was correspondingly extensive at the beginning. At the time, the range offered included spark plugs, radiators, hose clips and compression valves. In 1919 the word and trademark Beru was registered with the German patent office. Important development steps were the development of the first glow plug for diesel cold starts in 1929 and the granting of a patent for the first two-pole glow plug with nested poles isolated from ground in 1931. In 1945, after the war, production was resumed with the first customers Daimler-Benz , NSU and Opel . The company founder Albert Ruprecht died in 1959.

The first quick-start glow plug was introduced in 1978, and in 1992 slim five-millimeter plugs for diesel with direct injection were launched, in 2000 the Beru-Eichenauer joint venture was founded to develop PTC auxiliary heaters and in 2001 the first electronically controlled diesel quick-start system (ISS ). In 2003 the spark plug division (Eyquem) of Johnson Controls in France was taken over.

Beru was listed as a stock corporation since October 1997. In 2005, Beru was taken over by the US company BorgWarner by taking over the majority of the shares. In 2009 the company was renamed BorgWarner Beru Systems after taking over 100% of the capital and subsequent delisting (listing on the stock exchange) and the conversion to a GmbH.

In 2006, the pressure sensor glow plug (first time English Pressure Sensor Glow Plug PSG) presents for diesel engines at the fair Automechanika. By means of the pressure sensor glow plug, the combustion process in one (when fully equipped in each) cylinder can be controlled and regulated. By optimizing the combustion process, PSG technology helps to improve power delivery and, at the same time, to reduce emissions at the point where they arise - in the combustion chamber. PSG technology was first introduced in the US version of the VW Jetta in 2008.

In 2011, BorgWarner sold the tire pressure monitoring systems division to the Huf Group .

In 2012, BorgWarner sold the spark plugs division to the American company Federal-Mogul .
