overview

When his father died, the young Nino Cerruti gave up his philosophy and journalism studies. At the age of just 20, he inherited the Lanificio Fratelli Cerruti fabric factory, which his grandfather and his two brothers had founded in Biella in 1881. At the end of the 1950s, Cerruti ventured into the production of fashion. He showed his first men's collection under the name Hitman in 1957. In 1967 he founded the company Cerruti 1881 Maison de Couture , presented his first men's collection and opened his first boutique on the Place de la Madeleine in Paris to get closer to the international fashion world being. The fabric factory in Biella, the fashion label Cerruti and the Hitman brandformed the Fratelli Cerruti Group (Cerruti Brothers). The store on Place de la Madeleine is still the company's flagship store today . A women's collection followed in 1968. From then on he called his fashion label Cerruti 1881 . Cerruti was known for its classic style, luxurious materials, elegant business fashion for men and delicate women's fashion. A trademark of Nino Cerruti himself was the yellow sweater casually draped over his shoulders. In 2015, the exhibition Il Signor Nino at the Marino Marini Museum in Florence was dedicated to Cerruti as a protagonist of Italian fashion history.

Cerruti 1881

Giorgio Armani , who was to found his own fashion label in 1974, worked as a designer for Cerruti between 1964 and 1970 . In Paris in 1970, Nino Cerruti sent female and male models down the same catwalk to present his women's and men's collections simultaneously. The Cerruti company grew steadily: the product lines were expanded, the portfolio was broadened, international expansion followed. In addition to the main line Cerruti 1881 , the sporty brand Cerruti Sport was launched in 1981 (discontinued in 2002), in 1986 the youthful second line for men Cerruti Brothers was added (discontinued in 2000), in 1995 the women's second collection Cerruti Club (discontinued in 2000). From the mid-1990s, Cerruti brought other womenswear designers such as Narciso Rodriguez (1996-1997) and Peter Spelopoulos (1997-2002) on board and presented the newly launched Cerruti Arte Couture collection (discontinued in 2002). From 1988 to 2001, the women's fashion manufacturer Kemper from Krefeld , a former Escada subsidiary, produced under license the Cerruti women's fashion created in Paris by Nino Cerruti ; the men's main collection was created in-house by Hitman. Kemper also maintained the six German Cerruti boutiques, which were converted into Louis-Féraud boutiques after the loss of the license in 2001 .

Since leaving the fashion house, Nino Cerruti himself has concentrated on the fabric manufacturer Lanifici F.lli Cerruti in Biella, which also offers its own collections and, alongside Cerruti, also counts Chanel among its customers. In 2004 he bought the Italian furniture design company Baleri and since 2009 has presented modern furniture under the name Cerruti Baleri . As a furniture manufacturer, Cerruti Baleri also cooperates with other brands, such as Maison Martin Margiela in 2012 . Nino Cerruti also remained connected to the house of Cerruti and was a welcome guest in the front row at the Cerruti fashion shows in Paris, for example in January 2010 with his son Julian.
