Industry Classification Benchmark

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Industry Classification Benchmark (ICB) groups publicly traded companies according to their primary turnover in industries. There are 10 so-called industries, 19 supersectors, 41 sectors and 114 sub-sectors. The supersectors are derived from the former Stoxx sectors, while the 41 sectors are borrowed from the FTSE sectorization.

This classification was introduced on September 20, 2004 by the Dow Jones STOXX and FTSE and competes with the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS), which is used by Standard & Poor’s and MSCI . ICB is a four-tier structure. Each of the supersectors is calculated as an index so that the performance of the individual industries can be compared.
