Corrado Passera (born December 30, 1954 in Como , Lombardy ) is an Italian manager and politician . In the Monti government , from November 2011 to April 2013, he headed the ministries for infrastructure and transport as well as for the economy .

Career

After graduating in business administration from Luigi Bocconi University of Economics in Milan , Passera completed his Master of Business Administration at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1980 and then worked for McKinsey & Company for five years . He was then to 1990 in the CIR Group of Carlo De Benedetti , most recently as Director General . In 1991 he became general director of the Arnoldo Mondadori Editore publishing house and then of the media company Gruppo Editoriale L'Espresso . At the same time, he was co-chairman of the board at Olivetti from 1992 to 1996 , a company that has undergone significant restructuring during this time. In 1996 Passera took over the management of Banco Ambrosiano , which he merged with the Mailänder Sparkasse in 1998 to form Banca Intesa . In 1998 he was appointed head of the Italian Post Office . In the following four years he restructured the company, whose services were also expanded to include banking. After the restructuring, in the course of which around 20,000 jobs were lost, the Post made profits for the first time in 2002. Passera returned as CEO of Banca Intesa, which he merged in 2006 with the Turin-based financial institution Sanpaolo IMI to form the second largest Italian bank, Intesa Sanpaolo . In 2008 and 2009 he was involved in the founding of the airline Alitalia .

On November 16, 2011 Corrado Passera was appointed minister in the government of Mario Monti , which consisted of independent experts . He took over the management of the Ministry of Economic Development (Industry and Trade) and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. In the latter ministry, a deputy minister under Passera's supervision carried out a large part of the official business.
