Altero Matteoli (born September 8, 1940 in Cecina , † December 18, 2017 in Capalbio ) was an Italian politician of the Popolo della Libertà . In Silvio Berlusconi 's second and third cabinets, he was Italian Minister for the Environment (2001-2006). On May 29, 2006 he was elected Mayor of Orbetello ( Province of Grosseto ). From May 2008 to November 2011 he was Minister for Transport and Infrastructure in Berlusconi 's fourth cabinet .

Political career

Matteoli was a trained accountant and entrepreneur. His political career began with the neo-fascist Movimento Sociale Italiano (MSI-DN), for which he sat on the city councils of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana ( Province of Lucca ) and Livorno . He was also the party's regional chairman in Tuscany . From 1983 to 2006 he was a member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies , and from 2006 in the Senate .

In 1994 and 1995 his party changed under the new name Alleanza Nazionale (AN) to a right-wing conservative party. Matteoli u. a. in the parliamentary committee of inquiry into the Mafia and other criminal organizations. There he prepared a report on the secret agreements between the Mafia and politics.

After the victory of the center-right alliance Casa delle Libertà in the parliamentary elections in May 2001, he became Minister for Environmental Protection and Spatial Planning under Silvio Berlusconi and held this office until the change of power in May 2006. In April 2006 he was appointed chairman of the AN parliamentary group in the Senate. On May 8, 2008, Berlusconi appointed him as head of the infrastructure ministry in his new government.
