biography

Pecoraro Scanio's political career began in 1985 when he was elected to the local council in his hometown of Salerno. In 1992 he was elected to the Italian Chamber of Deputies and, at the same time, to the Municipal Council of Naples .

In the second government of Giuliano Amato , Pecoraro Scanio was Minister of Agriculture from April 2000 to June 2001. Since December 2001 he has been president of the Italian party Federazione dei Verdi , which is part of Romano Prodi's center-left alliance. From May 17, 2006 to May 8, 2008, Pecoraro Scanio was Environment Minister in the second government of Romano Prodi.

Because of the garbage crisis in Naples, which has been going on for 14 years, Pecoraro Scanio has come under public criticism alongside Antonio Bassolino , President of the Campania region , and other government and local politicians. A motion of censure against him in the Senate, brought in by the opposition and supported by former members of the government camp ( Dini , Mastella ), was no longer passed on January 23, 2008, as the vote of confidence on the entire government of Prodi took precedence on the following day.

On April 4, 2008, the Italian public prosecutor opened an official investigation against Pecoraro Scanio on suspicion of corruption and involvement in a criminal organization. The suspected cases relate to alleged favors in connection with the award of government contracts for waste disposal in the Campania region.

Pecoraro Scanio publicly declared himself bisexual in 2000 . His younger brother Marco Pecoraro Scanio is a former Italian Serie A footballer and was a representative of the Federazione dei Verdi in the Italian Senate from 2006 to 2008 .
