Political career

As the daughter of a Syracuse entrepreneurial family who run the COEMI company in the Priolo Gargallo petrochemical industrial area , Stefania Prestigiacomo started her own business at an early age and was elected chairman of the 'Association of Young Entrepreneurs of Syracuse' at the age of 23. She studied public administration and came to Forza Italia through her husband Angelo Bellucci , for which she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1994 . Her uncle Santi Nicita , who was President of the Region of Sicily from 1983 to 1984 , also supported her in her political career.

In the Italian Parliament she worked in the Committee on Public and Private Labor and in the Special Commission on Child Protection. She was also a deputy member of the Council of Europe and the Western European Union . She was re-elected in her Sicilian constituency in the 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2008 parliamentary elections; from 1996 to 2001 she was also deputy parliamentary group leader of her party in the Chamber of Deputies. In June 2001, Silvio Berlusconi brought her into his government ( Berlusconi II cabinet ) as 'Minister for Civil Rights and Equal Rights'. She held this office until the change of government in May 2006.

In the regional elections in Sicily in 2005 as well as in 2008 she was the top candidate of the center-right alliance Casa delle Libertà and Popolo della Libertà , both times a male candidate was preferred and elected: 2005 Totò Cuffaro and 2008 Raffaele Lombardo . On May 8, 2008, Berlusconi appointed her as environment minister in his fourth cabinet .

On December 22nd, 2010, she announced her departure from her party after she was outvoted by her own party in a vote on an application for development on the garbage problem. She withdrew this announcement shortly afterwards after talking to Berlusconi.

One of their successes is the ban on plastic bags in Italy, which came into force on January 1, 2011, but was not implemented in 2013 either.
