Moneyfarm is a digital asset manager, also known as a robo-advisor , that operates in Germany, Italy and the UK.

In Germany, the business is operated by MFM Investment GmbH. The company is based in Frankfurt am Main .

According to its own information, the company looks after more than one billion euros for more than 43,000 customers across Europe.

history

Moneyfarm was founded in March 2011 by Paolo Galvani and Giovanni Daprà in Italy. In February 2016, the company expanded to Great Britain and in November 2018 Moneyfarm entered the German market with the takeover of vaamo. A year later, in November 2019, Moneyfarm launched its own product in Germany. The vaamo products are continued unchanged to this day.

Moneyfarm is valued at around 115 million euros from three financing rounds. In November 2015, the private equity firm Cabot Square Capital and the venture capitalist United Ventures invested 16 million euros in Moneyfarm in the first financing round. Two and a half years later, the German Allianz, through its subsidiary Allianz Asset Management (AAM), became the largest minority shareholder in Moneyfarm in a second financing round. In total, the company raised around £ 40 million in May 2018. Other investors included Endeavor Catalyst and the Fondazione di Sardegna.

In the most recent round of financing in November 2019, the Italian Post, Poste Italiane , also participated in Moneyfarm. Together with Allianz , it made a further 40 million euros available to the asset manager. In addition, Moneyfarm and Poste Italiane decided on a large cooperation in Italy.

In June 2020, Moneyfarm, together with other European fintechs, founded the European Fintech Association, which advocates uniform financial market rules within the European Union .

product

In contrast to most other robo-advisors, Moneyfarm offers its customers in Germany a product that combines active and passive funds. Seven different portfolios are created based on the customers' willingness to take risks.

To this end, Moneyfarm in Germany works with Allianz Global Investors , one of Allianz's asset managers. The portfolios offered are based on a multi-asset strategy by Allianz Global Investors (AGI) and have a risk management system designed to reduce losses. Allianz funds, actively managed products from competitors and ETFs are used in the portfolios. Fund selection and ongoing portfolio monitoring are carried out by Allianz Global Investors. This selection process is based, among other things, on the more than 1,400 interviews that AGI conducts with the fund managers each year.

The active funds are used for inefficient asset classes such as stocks from emerging markets and high-yield bonds. For more efficient asset classes such as European blue chip stocks , however, cost-efficient ETFs are used. According to the company, the base price for the active products from Allianz Global Investors should correspond to that of a comparable passive fund. In the case of third-party funds, the cooperation with Allianz Global Investors gives private investors access to cheaper institutional unit classes.

In terms of customer care, Moneyfarm relies on what is known as a hybrid service model: in addition to the automated determination of the risk profile and control of the portfolio using algorithms, customers can also be supported by a human advisor. The risk profile, the selected strategy or fundamental financial topics can be discussed in a personal dialogue.
