Airgas is an American manufacturer of industrial gases . The company's product portfolio includes gases for industrial and medical use such as argon, helium, nitrogen and hydrogen. Airgas also sells tools and safety products from third-party suppliers through its sales channels. The company was founded in 1982 by Peter McCausland as a holding company for the oxygen manufacturer CONNOX from Stafford , which he acquired . Airgas grew strongly in the following years, particularly due to hostile takeovers, and in the mid-1990s achieved an annual turnover of 1.5 billion US dollars. In 2015, the French Air Liquide decided to take over Airgas for $ 13.4 billion. Airgas is now a full subsidiary of Air Liquide.
