history
The guard regiment was set up in 1962 from parts of the Hugo Eberlein guard regiment . The unit was given the honorary name Friedrich Engels in 1980. At this time, the inscription on the sleeve was changed accordingly. The barracks built at the end of the 19th century for the Emperor Alexander Guard Grenadier Regiment No. 1 on the Kupfergraben were chosen as headquarters .
Since Berlin's four-power status meant that only troops of the four powers could be stationed in the city, the regiment was formally subordinate to the Soviet city commanders .
With the decommissioning of the NVA in 1990, this unit was disbanded. The legal successor was the Bundeswehr Command East . The barracks in the historical center of Berlin is being rebuilt and is part of the building complex on the Museum Island as a “museum courtyard” and part of the BMB.
