location

Mandawa is about 170 km (driving distance) northwest of Jaipur at an altitude of about 335 m above sea level. d. M .; the distance to Delhi is about 250 km in a northeast direction. The climate is mostly hot and dry; Rain falls almost exclusively during the summer monsoon months .

population

Official population statistics have only been kept and published since 1991.

year 1991 2001 2011
Residents 16,490 20,830 23,335

Approx. 66.5% of the mostly Hindi- speaking residents are Hindus and just under 33.5% are Muslims ; the other religious communities ( Sikhs , Jains , Buddhists and Christians ) hardly play a role in the rural regions of India. The male and female proportions of the population are roughly equal.

economy

For centuries, the city's inhabitants lived on agriculture, self-sufficient , with cattle breeding playing a major role. From the 18th to the beginning of the 20th century, camel caravans moved from central India to the Near East and transported goods (fabrics and spices) that were also in demand in Europe; many merchants settled in the growing Shekhawati cities, which in turn attracted craftsmen, small traders and service providers of all kinds.

history

Mandawa was founded in 1765 by Sardul Singh , who provided the village that had been here earlier with a palace and a fortress wall that withstood the attacks of the landlords ( thakur ) of Jaipur and Sikar in 1828 . The city experienced an upswing due to the caravan trade , which ended with the shift of trade to the sea at the beginning of the 20th century.

Attractions

  • The main attraction of the city are the many merchant palaces ( havelis ) built around an inner courtyard and richly decorated with paintings , which served both for residential purposes and as warehouses. Most of the paintings date from around 1900 and show religious motifs ( Krishna , Radha and the Gopis or Shiva with his Nandi bull) or achievements of foreign countries (ships, trains, cars, bicycles, etc.).
  • The center of the city is the fort, which has now been converted into a stylish hotel.
Surroundings
  • A trip to the Desert Resort , located approx. 2 km to the south, is worthwhile .
  • The old, but now mostly dry, wells are also worth seeing.
