The Mouchard – Bourg-en-Bresse railway is a standard-gauge railway in France . It is part of the destination Mulhouse - Besançon - Lyon and runs roughly in a south-south-west orientation. The entire 113 km long route consists of two sections with different technical features. The northern part is topographically demanding with many alternating inclines and declines as well as very winding. Mainly passenger trains run here, while in the southern part there are also many freight trains running from Dijon into the Rhône Valley . The line is electrified with two different voltages and only has double tracks in the southern, almost 35 km long section Saint-Amour - Bourg-en-Bresse , but was originally designed to be double-tracked over its entire length.

The Mouchard – Bourg-en-Bresse railway line was planned, applied for and approved together with the line to Besançon. The applicant on April 20, 1854 was the Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée (PLM). This project came at a time of great upheavals and mergers between French railway companies, which was concluded with the agreement of April 11, 1857.

On August 1st, 1864, the line between Bourg-en-Bresse and Lons-le-Saunier was put into operation by PLM. Between 1973 and 1995, RTG trains ran on this route , which corresponded to the wishes of travelers to move faster than with locomotive teams. They represent the transition to electrification, which was introduced in the southern section from 1969 and in the northern section from 1995. Since December 2004, the entire length of the route has been used for TGV trains between Strasbourg and Marseille .

Local railways

Along the route there were a number of meter gauge - branch lines , especially in Lons-le-Saunier , Cuiseaux and Bourg-en-Bresse . Since 1879, several mutually competing companies came into being, which merged between 1919 and 1921 and henceforth operated under the name Départementale des Tramways de l'Ain .

Lons-le-Saunier was the starting point of several secondary railways of the Chemins de fer vicinaux du Jura (CFV) in north, south and east directions with a route network of over 200 km. The Saint-Maur junction, which was about 6.3 km from the railway overpass at Lons-le-Saunier station, divided the route to Arinthod in a southerly direction and to Saint-Claude and Mouthe to the east.

The 29 km long local railway Régie Départementale des Tramways de l'Ain (RDTA) , or Tramways de l'Ain for short , ran from 1934 to 1938 between the community of Cuiseaux, which has 1,300 inhabitants, and Saint-Trivier-de-Courtes in the Ain department with connection to Pont-de-Vaux .

In Bourg-en-Bresse a branch of the RDTA also operated to the southwest until the end of 1937, the 51 km long route to Villefranche-sur-Saône via Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne . A section of the RDTA was also in operation in the opposite direction. After a few kilometers this led north, then east, crossed the Mouchard – Bourg-en-Bresse railway at Le Moulin-des-Ponts , and finally led to Mâcon .
