Mouchard – Bourg-en-Bresse to Bourg-en-Bresse railway line

The Dijon-Ville – Saint-Amour railway is a double-track , electrified railway line in France. It continues in Saint-Amour via Bourg-en-Bresse and Ambérieu to Lyon . The 108 km long route runs roughly in a north-south direction and connects the regional capital Dijon in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté on the Paris-Marseille railway line - with which it runs parallel at a distance of 15 to 20 km - to the canton capital Saint-Amour in the Jura department with the Besançon –Lyon line. Accordingly, these two routes are also used mutually as diversions in the event of construction work or operational disruptions.

The railway line is listed as Corridor No. 2 Part of the ETCS -controlled large-scale traffic axis Antwerp - ( Basel ) / Lyon.

On July 3, 1875, the concession agreement for the construction and operation of the line was signed between the Chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée (PLM) and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport. From the beginning it was also used to transport people. The first 45 km opened in June 1882, just 7 years after the contract was signed, and the second half a year later. From the beginning, it was planned to have two tracks, but the second track was only added in three steps between May 1886 and May 1901.

Local railways

Mervans had a meter- gauge local railway to Chalon-sur-Saône, 30 km away . This was operated from 1901 to 1924 by the Chemins de fer d'intérêt local de Saône-et-Loire (SL) and then until 1945 by the Régie départementale des chemins de fer de Saône-et-Loire , just like the 33 km long Route from Louhans to Tournus .

In Dommartin-lès-Cuiseaux there was a connection to the 29 km long local railway Régie Départementale des Tramways de l'Ain (RDTA) , or Tramways de l'Ain , Cuiseaux - Pont-de-Vaux for short, from 1934 to 1938 .

Younger story

Electrification could also be accomplished in two stages: Dijon – Mervans went online on May 20, 1969, the southern part a year later on May 12, 1970. Even before that, the route had undergone extensive renovation with the removal of some crossings, replacement of the Ballast bed and installation of a new traffic safety system (BAL).

Today trains of the TGV , TER Bourgogne and freight trains run on the route .

The route starts at km 314.3 - Kilometrierung the station Paris Gare de Lyon starting - and ending with the brand km 424.634 on branch Saint-Amour , where the railway line Mouchard-Bourg-en-Bresse is true. Saint-Amour is 2 km away on this route. It is only shortly before the two lines meet that the department border to the Jura department is crossed.

The southern districts of Dijon are characterized by numerous railway infrastructures such as a locomotive depot, workshops and the Dijon-Perrigny shunting yard as well as industrial operations along the Canal de Bourgogne . This runs parallel to the Saône at a short distance of one to two kilometers from the railway line. The terrain is rather flat and the route is straight. Behind the Saône bridge, the route describes a sharp angle from previously south-south-east to south-west and only after Navilly does the route lead again in south-south-east direction, but is now much more curved.

The route passes through three different departments in the Region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . The route has its origin in the Côte-d'Or department . After almost 50 km it leads into the Saône-et-Loire department and shortly before its destination into the Jura.
