The Coolus – Sens railway line was a predominantly single-track railway line in eastern France, which connected three main roads leading away from Paris . It is largely shut down today. Only a few sections are still released for freight traffic. This railway line is one of three sections of the original plan between Orléans and Châlons-sur-Marne .
history
After an agreement of a bidding consortium with the Minister of Agriculture, Economy and Public Affairs on June 14, 1864, a concession for the construction and operation of a rail link that was to connect Orléans and Châlons-sur-Marne was awarded. This corresponds to about a quarter of a circle around Paris at a distance of 150 km. For this, a deposit of 2.4 million francs had to be deposited. Of this 235 km long route, only 157 km belong to this route. In 1880 the line was given a second track.
Just four years after it went into operation on May 6, 1873, the line was sold to the Compagnie du chemin de fer d'Orléans à Châlons on April 26, 1877 with the consent of the responsible ministry . This company also acquired the Montargis – Sens and Orléans – Montargis railway lines , which corresponded to the complete quadrant. All three sections, each managed as an independent railway line, changed ownership to the state railway company Chemins de fer de l'État by government decree on May 25, 1878, along with many other lines from nine other companies that were threatened with bankruptcy . The state had an interest in keeping traffic going. This route network, which was spatially connected, was of little economic importance.
This state-founded rescue company found a buyer in the Chemin de fer de l'Est on June 11, 1883, who was able to integrate this route into its own route network and operated it until the state railway company SNCF was founded in 1938.
With the takeover by the SNCF on October 2, 1938, the passenger service between Troyes and Sens was closed. The Coolus – Troyes section followed with the start of the summer timetable on May 28, 1972.
The railway bridge over the Yonne , which was destroyed by German acts of war in 1944 , was never rebuilt. As early as November 12, 1954, the adjoining section up to railway kilometer 155.2 was closed and redeveloped; on October 9, 1998, another section to Sens-Clément (BK 151.9) and the port access followed.
