Le Pontet is a French municipality with 17,530 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) in the department of Vaucluse in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .
geography
The city of Le Pontet borders Avignon to the northeast . It is the link to the historical region of County Venaissin . The Rhone forms the western boundary of Le Pontet.
The municipality is very flat: with a minimum of 16 meters and a maximum of 30 meters above sea level, the difference in altitude is only 14 meters.
history
In 1925, Le Pontet became an independent municipality from Avignon.
Since 1507 the Latin name Parietes Ponteti secus Rhodanum (German: Walls of Pontet on the banks of the Rhône ) referred to a small settlement that later became today's place. The name is derived from a small bridge that has disappeared today. It was roughly at the entrance to the village from Avignon. At first it was a wooden bridge, in 1537 a stone bridge was built. The work lasted five months. In June 1618 the bridge was rebuilt, the crossing was only one meter and twenty wide. Later the name Pontet was transferred to the whole village from the resettlement.
There was a cross near the church for those who could not attend masses. There was also a lavoir , which was originally built from wood in the 15th century. In 1557 it was rebuilt from stones.
The important city of Avignon encompassed the area of today's municipalities of Le Pontet and Morières-lès-Avignon since the 10th century . The construction of canals from Fontaine-de-Vaucluse to Avignon also gave Le Pontet a small economic boom. With the settlement of the anti-popes in Avignon in 1309, the whole region experienced a great boom, which led to a sharp increase in population.
- coat of arms
The coat of arms of Le Pontet is partly speaking: the French word Pont means bridge , and so a single-arched bridge can be seen on a blue background, above it three golden keys lying one above the other. The keys symbolize the city of Avignon, to which the village belonged until 1925 and which also has three golden keys in its coat of arms. The coat of arms was only created in 1941 when the mayor was looking for one for the municipality. He hired an engineer to investigate the origins of Le Pontet and later a draftsman who finally completed the coat of arms.
