Remains of the medieval city fortifications

Vedène is a French municipality with 11,259 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vaucluse in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur . It belongs to the canton of Le Pontet in the Arrondissement of Avignon .

history

The city was mentioned for the first time in 1105, on the occasion of the donation of Pons Rainoard, the landlord of the place, the moor of Vedène to the canons of Avignon handed.

During the 14th century , the fiefdom changed hands frequently and fell into the hands of the Rainoard, Castello, Gaufridi, Coyrano, Rodulphi and Galliani families (Galléans in French). The latter initially acquired the rights to the feudal estate in 1352 and finally bought it free in 1443.
