Saint-Trophime church

Saumane-de-Vaucluse is a French commune with 948 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vaucluse department of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region .

location

The village is located east of Avignon , at the foot of the Vaucluse Mountains ( Monts de Vaucluse ) and is four kilometers from Fontaine-de-Vaucluse and five kilometers from L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue .

history

Saumane Castle was built on a hill above the city in the 12th century . The Romanesque church of Saint-Trophime was also built during this period .

In 1451, the Saumane fief of Nicholas V (Pope) went to Baudet de Sade . The village remained in the possession of the House of Sade until the end of feudalism. In the 16th century, Baudet's line died out, so that the fief fell to another branch of the family.

In 1720, the village took part in the construction of the plague wall , which was supposed to protect the Venaissin from the plague from Provence .

Attractions

The village stretches the entire length of a slope and is criss-crossed by narrow, cobbled streets with old houses.

Northern facade of Saumane Castle

The castle is hidden behind the park's pine trees . It was built in the 12th century and mostly remodeled by Baudet de Sade in the mid-15th century. It then took on the appearance of a fortress with such an elaborate defense system that the local authorities became concerned and halted the work. After the castle was abandoned during the Revolution , it was restored in the 19th century.

Bell tower

Next to the wash house is a square bell tower crowned by a simple bell. At the end of the rocky promontory, facing the narrow road carved into the rock, there is the Romanesque church of Saint-Trophime , which was expanded in the 16th century.
