Château de Val-Seille

Courthézon is a French municipality with 5639 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Vaucluse in the region Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur .

location

Courthézon is nine kilometers southeast of Orange , east of the Rhone . The communities of Bédarrides , Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Jonquières are in the immediate vicinity .

history

A fort built by the Romans was used to defend Orange. The stone layers were used for the fortification walls of the old castle.

There was a quarry in the municipality that was used to build the Orange Theater .

During the Huguenot Wars , the Catholic city was attacked several times by Huguenots .

Courthézon belonged to the annexation by Louis XIV. In 1673 to the Principality of Orange . From 1703 to 1731 the city was under the rule of the Conti family and then belonged to it, sealed by a contract between the Prince of Conti and Louis XV. , finally to the royal domain.

At the end of the 18th century , dams for the Ouvèze were built from the stones of the destroyed Prince's Castle.

The coat of arms shows a lying golden hip horn with a red fetter on a blue background , including two golden six-pointed stars and three nails pointing upwards.

The motto is: Saevis tranquillus in undis ("Calm on thunderous waves").
