Paris – Marseille railway line to Paris-Gare-de-Lyon

The Avallon – Nuits-sous-Ravières railway was a single-track railway line for passenger and freight traffic in France . It was built and operated by the Compagnie des chemins de fer de Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée (PLM) and abandoned in 1954.

history

Elevation profile of the routes
L'Isle-sur-Serein station with CFD billiards rail bus. Typical train composition of the interwar years. Right track of the PLM (SNCF)

As early as the mid-1860s, this cross-connection was considered important in order to better connect the sub-prefectures of Avallon and Montbard . Accordingly, on May 1, 1863, the PLM, which already operated or built other routes in this region, was granted a license. Administrative problems caused by the Franco-German War prevented work from starting immediately. The war with the hereditary enemy in particular showed how important a strategic east-west connection would be. At the end of 1875 the route was declared "of public interest" so that public passenger transport could also take place.

Track plan of Nuits-sous-Ravières station, 1959

There were further delays in the realization of the route due to disagreements in local politics about the best route and the purchase of land. The construction work was not commissioned until May 26, 1883, and the line opened at the end of November 1888. It soon became apparent that the utilization of public passenger and freight traffic was lower than expected. On the day three passenger trains with a coupled freight car drove the route at 25 km / h. There were always official complaints from local politicians to the railway company about the poorly maintained infrastructure and the rolling stock used. As early as 1932, passenger trains were replaced by buses. Even with the takeover of the route by the SNCF in 1938, neither the condition of the route nor the rolling stock, nor the utilization or frequency, changed. After a certain hustle and bustle during World War II, the line was completely closed in 1952 and rededicated on November 12, 1954.

Even after the line was closed, the tracks on the Nuits-sous-Ravières – Châtillon-sur-Seine railway at Nuits-sous-Ravières were initially not linked to those on the Paris – Marseille line , but only used as a siding. The former island station was only closed in the late 1960s as a wedge station , the Raccordement de Nuits-sous-Ravières junction .

In L'Isle-sur-Serein there was a connection to the meter gauge railway line LarocheL'Isle- Angely , which was operated by the Compagnie de chemins de fer départementaux (CFD) from 1885 to 1951 .

Today you can still see some station buildings, sheds and track fields, but the track bed was often leveled and partly built over with houses. About halfway through both the LGV Sud-Est in a north-south direction and its junction to the Paris-Marseille railway line and the city of Montbard and the A 6 autoroute cross at the same level. Elsewhere, agricultural areas use the former route.
