Mercurey is a French commune with 1,193 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Saone-et-Loire in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté .
history
The Mercurey area was inhabited as early as prehistoric times. The place name - derived from the Roman god Mercurius - suggests a Roman settlement; Via Agrippa ran nearby . The current municipality was created from the merger of the former municipality of Bourgneuf-Val-d'Or with the municipality of Mercurey in 1971.

Viticulture
The Mercurey appellation covers around 100 hectares of vineyards in the Côte Chalonnaise area . The municipalities of Bourgneuf-Val-d´Or , Mercurey and Saint-Martin-sous-Montaigu are permitted . Almost all red wines that can be stored well are made from Pinot noir with proportions of Pinot gris and Pinot Liébault . About ten percent of white wine is also made from the Chardonnay grape with portions of Pinot Blanc . The appellation has around 30 premiers crus ( Clos du Roi , Champs Martin , Clos l'évêque , Clos des Montaigu ...).

Community partnerships
Mercurey is with the community Genappe in Wallonia (Belgium) twinned . There is a friendship agreement with Sizzano in Piedmont (Italy).
