Toponymy

The place is mentioned for the first time in 971: In pago Adamos, in villa que dicitur Adentenx et alio menso a Longapetra (In the Gau der Adamer, in the place called Adentenx or "Longa Petra" - long stone). While the names for the Gau and the place are still of Gallic origin, the more recent name Longa Petra appears in Latin. It indicates that there was a Roman road in the place where the house that was donated at the time was located. In the 12th century, Longa Petra appeared on Braysse and from then on the place name Longepierre remained.

history

The area of Longepierre became the property of the Dukes of Burgundy in 1291 , who soon elevated it to a barony . In 1500 Philippe de Longwy , in 1510 Guillaume Lallemand was lord of the place and in 1544 Nicolas Pouffier de Taniot was Baron of Longepierre, in 1680 Hilaire-Bernard de Requeleyne followed . He was a well-known writer and translator of Greek authors.

In 1592 there was a castle with a moat not far from the church. Champ-Bégon , south of the Doubs , was a fief of the Lords of Longepierre, the name goes back to the old word becco (le bec) and denoted an elevation between two bodies of water. The hamlet of Paule is located close to the Doubs , the current street name indicates that there used to be a mill there. The name is derived from pelle which not only meant a shovel, but also the elevation or the sluice that held back the water of the Bief , in this case probably more of an elevation against the Doubs . Apart from the Bourg , only these two hamlets are populated. In 1594 Longepierre was attacked and looted by Capitaine la Fortune during the Huguenot Wars . In 1790 Longepierre became the capital of a canton with 8 municipalities, until 1802 it was merged with the canton of Verdun-sur-le-Doubs . The community is purely agricultural and fought against rural exodus during the 20th century. At least some craft businesses could be preserved. The dairy closed in 1985 and the school in 1988.
