Varennes-le-Grand is a French commune with 2,298 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Saone-et-Loire in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It belongs to the arrondissement Chalon-sur-Saône and is part of the canton of Saint-Rémy (until 2015: canton of Chalon-sur-Saône-Sud ).

Varennes-le-Grand lies on the Saône , which forms the eastern municipal boundary. Varennes-le-Grand is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Loup-de-Varennes in the north and north-west, Épervans in the north and north-east, Ouroux-sur-Saône in the east, Marnay in the south-east, Saint-Cyr in the south, and Saint-Ambreuil in the South and southwest and La Charmée to the west.

The Autoroute A6 and the former Route nationale 6 (today's D906) run through the municipality . The municipality's former stop is on the Paris – Marseille railway line .
