Fontaines (also: Fontaines-en-Bourgogne ) is a French municipality with 1948 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in Saône-et-Loire in the Région Bourgogne Franche-Comté . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Chalon-sur-Saône and the canton of Chagny .
geography
Fontaines is on the Canal du Center . Numerous types of wine are grown here in the Bourgogne wine region . Fontaines is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Rully in the north, Chagny in the north and north-east, Lessard-le-National in the east, Fragnes-La Loyère in the south-east, Farges-lès-Chalon in the south and south-east, Mellecey in the south and south-west and Mercurey in the west .
The A6 autoroute runs along the eastern edge of the municipality . The Fontaines-Mercurey stop is on the Paris-Marseille railway line .
history
The sources initially name the place as Fontanœ . The name (French: "sources") refers to the numerous water sources on the mountain slopes in the west of the municipality. Fontaines Castle was destroyed in 1569.
